Resin Technology

BioBag® has the most diverse compostable bag and film offering on the market. BioBags are made from Mater-Bi®, the world’s first and largest family of compostable resins.

Mater-Bi® Mater-Bi

The majority of BioBag products are made from Mater-Bi®. Mater-Bi® is produced by Novamont, an Italian research company dedicated to environmental alternatives to polyethylene-based plastics. Mater-Bi® is an innovative family of bioplastics that uses substances obtained from plants, such as but not limited to, non-genetically modified corn starch, and biodegradable/compostable polymers obtained both from renewable raw materials and fossil raw materials. Mater-Bi® is the first completely biodegradable and compostable bio-polymer ever invented. The processes are protected by more than 200 groups of patents. Mater-Bi® is the result of continuous efforts to use new technologies and new industrial supply chains based on the use of renewable energy and raw materials, while ensuring the highest levels of performance. The use of renewable raw materials, instead of those derived from fossils in the chemical and plastics industry, can help control greenhouse gases. There are many grades of Mater-Bi® resins purposely designed for specific BioBag products. To learn more about Mater-Bi® resins, visit Novamont’s website.

Water Vapor Transmission Rate

Using a bag with a high Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR), like a BioBag, is important because it helps with reducing the weight of organic food waste due to the loss of water vapor through evaporation. A high WVTR rate also reduces the growth of mold and fungus that cause odors. It is key that a bag with a high WVTR is used in a ventilated bin like BioBag’s UmiMax Food Scrap Collection Buckets to achieve the best possible reduction of moisture.

According to the ASTM standard, a material is measured in 30 microns. A BioBag in this thickness has a value of up to 1200 gr/m²/24h. A thinner BioBag gives an even higher WVTR value. A traditional plastic (PELD) bag made in 30 microns has a value of only 20 gr/m²/24h.

Benefits of a BioBag and its moisture reduction properties:

  • Reduces mold, fungus and smell in food waste
  • Reduces the weight of food waste which decreases handling and energy costs as well as tipping fees
  • Gives a higher comfort for personal hygiene, medical and hospital products because the moisture is not held toward the skin

Production Technology

BioBag is the world’s largest brand of certified compostable bags and films. We have sales offices in 20 countries and have production facilities in Europe, South America and North America.

The production facilities and machines are specifically designed for quick and efficient production of bio products. The facilities’ capabilities include extruding, printing, and conversion of compostable film products. (For more information on the processing of Mater-Bi® films, see here)

Although production of bio products is still a relatively new technology and process, our factories have established a high level of quality control. However, if you ever receive a BioBag product that is not meeting your expectations, please let us know and we will send you a replacement.
